Finsiel and the Italian National Library System (SBN)
The National Library Service is the Italian library network created by the Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Asset with the cooperation of the Regions and Universities.
The co-operation among libraries is the SBN's special feature: the network in fact includes over 1400 Italian libraries (most of the main public libraries and many private and local libraries), that co-operate in real time in cataloguing and lending. This allows for the achievement of a very high level of productivity and a reduction in the time new publications are made available to the public.
The Indice system, constituting the operational center of the service and the central catalog of all of the network's libraries, includes about 6 million works, one and a half million authors and over 14 million localization indications, i.e. information on where the books and periodicals are kept and available. The general public can access this veritable mine of information via the Internet through the OPAC service developed for the ICCU by Finsiel.
Finsiel has been working with the SBN for over 16 years, ever since it designed and developed the Indice s ervice network and central system using the technologies of the time based on mainframe-class proprietary systems. In its capacity as principal of a business combine that also includes Akros, Finsiel has won the competition for the new National Library System (SBN): a new architectural set-up of the service, based on open operational systems and developed using state-of-the-art object-oriented technologies in order to provide the SBN with new characteristics in terms of flexibility, modularity, management convenience and interoperability with other library management systems.
